SNOW HAS ARRIVED

9 01 2010

So, as we bundle up for yet another winter of cold temps. We look forward to what is to come in the new year. In our devotions this year we have opened up the book of John. As we go through verse by verse and talk about the meaning of the text we see such fruit from the questions the kids have. It is equally great to see the older ones jump in an answer some of the lofty questions. So as we undergo that, my wife and I are going through the book, “The love dare” and so far it seems to be theologically correct and is instilling the need to serve our spouse not be served (Rom 12:10). The year has been blessed and God in His great mercy has shown us much kindness for that we are grateful. As this year starts out fresh we thank Him for His faithfulness to sinners of whom I am cheif. To have given me such gifts in the form of a loving, committed wife, healthy children and a roof over my head with a steady wonderful job. I am thankful. In addition to that He has continued to bless us at a church that is faithful to God’s word and convicts us to grow. I am not deserving of any of these things. I only deserve death and hell. But God in His abudent mercy has given me much to be thankful for. But of all these great gifts I can only stand in awe that God Himself came to the earth and suffered the payment I deserved. I pray we as a family will grow to be more like Christ and bring glory to His name until our last breath. Here are some pictures taken January 9th 2010 followed by a few around Christmas time….

Image Editing

29 11 2009

So I have honestly avoided image editing due to a few reasons. Number one is I think the best photos are the ones without any manipulation to the original. The ones that are not set up but taken as natural as possible (with a few exceptions). Now when it comes to nature and landscape your ability to snap photos in more natural light mixed with great wide angle mixed with wonderful macro shots equals some great photos. But my personal preference on both aspects of photography is to edit as little as possible. And further more the software can get rather expensive. So those are my hesitations to photo editing.

With that said I think you can do some wonderful things with photo editing software like sharpen an image, make it black and white, remove red eye and an array of effects then can really bring out your subject. In addition to those benefits I found a great free photo editing software call Gimp. It is free and has a tone of effects. Tutorials can be found on youtube also just by typing in Gimp in the search box. With all that said I wanted to just introduce my two test projects. I tried to do as little as possible but my main focus was to bring out the subject or the storyline in the photograph.

Isabella with Christmas Tree.

Now the image itself was taken with our Kodak Z612 had all standard setting with the exception of a high ISO setting (200 I think). The flash was turned off to avoid flare from the bulb. So I edited the photo below in Gimp and just free hand selected the bulb, inverted the selection and changed the rest of the photo to black and white with the below result.

Isabella w/Christmas Bulb

This next image is a basic photo of our road with a car off in the distance. My original intent was to get some pictures of cars going by with a slow shutter speed to get the blurred effect but without a tripod I just cannot get this without blurring the entire photo. So that will be our next purchase after the update of our camera from a point and shoot to a SLR (Aim is for a Canon Rebel Xt1). So I changed my angle and brought it down to road level (still trying to keep the rule of thirds-keeping the horizon either in the top third or bottom third of the frame). I wanted to get depth so I adjusted my aperture, ISO with standard shutter speed. Here was the result.

Street view with car in distance.

The photo was edited much like the one above with the exception of highlighting the distant headlights to get them to pop out a bit. Then I just selected the above horizon and blurred image to abut 55 percent. With the below result. Keeping the yellow stripes in give a primary focal point.

Road picture with effects.

I also wanted to add in one that I had to edit due to lighting issues during the original (hence a good reason to photo edit). This is a picture of my grandfather in his Marine blues. A great story can be found about his time here (although he likes to put up a disclaimer that there was some fabrications and misquotes in this article). But we attempted to get some pictures of his blues after he had worked so hard on trying to restore it. After a few flash photos I noticed (like most flash images) it can leave the subject flat and take out much of the characteristics of the person and the background. So I attempted to remove all the lamp shades to prevent flash as a necessity. Only to discover after printing they all had a  yellow glow. So here is the original with an attempted fix. Although we are working on a new shoot in the future this was a temporary fix. One negative about this is that the colors do not pop out and are lost in the rendering but the characteristics of a great man and war veteran come out loud and clear.

Now when edited I just sharpened the background lines, brought out the bricks more and did a sepia filter on it. With the below result.

Trip around town.

15 11 2009

Today has been a wonderful day around town (November 15th 2009). This whole weekend has been filled with a lot of car rides and travel. On one hand we love the sights yet on the other hand, six kids can be very restless. My wife has taken up a new job which is searching the internet for great deals on items we need around the house or can sell. It has been very much a blessing to us. Just this weekend we gave away a boppy pillow to a new mom from freecycle. We then sold a baby car seat cover to a new dad of his second child. After that we bought a new bed for our little Grace. During this time we pass out our million dollar bill gospel tracts and pray to meet the right people. It is such a blessing and we as a family have benefited from her labor on top of everything else she does. So this weekend she also gave me a little bit of time and let me go out to take some photos around town. So these are some of those pictures from this weekend around Grand Blanc, Michigan. I am using our Kodak Z612 and many of the photos were taken in the automatic setting. Some of the indoor were set on the Manual setting with a high ISO setting (400).

Reformation Day and Harvest time

27 10 2009

What a great time of year. The time in which we celebrate many wonderful things. It is a good time to begin to store food in your freezers, a time to pull out your favorite winter sweatshirt and time to take the kids to more then a few houses so we (I mean they) can get some candy. As the leaf color peaks we have had some great fall time celebrations. We have our church harvest dinner coming up in a few weeks and it truly is a wonderful time to have such great food and fellowship. A bit crazy since our family takes up a whole table but it is a passing season so we will rejoice even in that. So for this reformation day I have been working with Isabella on her hovering mode. It has been tough but she can hover for about 5 minutes. I am trying to get her to hover in one spot for a bit longer but she is only 3. So for this reformation day she will be a fairy. This is a photo of her in mid hover….

A great time to be a dad and I know Christina feels the same about being a mom. These times are so wonderful and going by so fast. If you are a young family…ENJOY it. If you are a grandparent…ENJOY it. A great time to be thankful for all that God has provided to us this year and a wonderful time to plan the year to come.

More Autumn and more fun

19 10 2009

So today was Sunday. It started out with the whole crew getting ready to leave for church. We left with just enough time to get there which happens way to often. Well part way through our trip we realized we needed gas on the way home and left our money there. So with not enough money or time we retreated home to have a family worship service. It was a great time with some great songs and then some fellowship around the word. We touched on Matthew 6:10 and the need for prayer to start with God’s will not our grocery list. We have been blessed by our Pastor on that subject and thought we should continue here at home. Well since we were dressed for church but missed it we thought we would go to a local hiking trail that we LOVE in Lapeer County. It is called the Butterfly Park and few people know it is even there. A women who owned the land donated it to be used for a nature park. It has about 5 miles of trials with bridges, ponds, large gardens, trails, etc. It is a Michigan Gem and we love to go there. So we went and were able to take just a few pictures although we wanted to take much more…we got lost. But 30 minutes later we found our way out, tired, but out. So here are some of those pictures.

Another Michigan Fall

As fall is under way we have already felt the pressure to begin our fall photos. The main reason is that the color change comes and goes in such a short window. So for prime pictures we will need to utilize the next two weeks for just that. Today on October 17th we have ventured out into the yard and I have found some great colors as well as some remaining summer tones. The kids are in there pants, coats and the occasional hat so we are bundling up around the Morris household. This weekend was filled with great opportunities to host and my wife did a TON of work in making our home inviting. We as a family are so blessed at all she does to serve. She has also perfected her new chili recipe so that adds an extra warm cozy feeling on chili nights and long conversations about theology to politics or just some spontaneous kid performances in our living room. Either way, play time has migrated from the yard to the living room and we are enjoying the transition. Here are some more pictures I took today around 4 p.m. so the sun was still about two hours away from setting.

Joshua Benjamin Morris was born on September 20th at 10:28 and weighed 8.6 oz and was 20” inches long.

God has been good to our family and in His mercy and kindness He will guide me (a sinner) to His purpose and plan in the needs of being a husband to my wife and father to our children. By His grace Joshua will come up as will our other little ones to fear God and to love Him and trust in Jesus with all there heart.
